Nebuchadnezzar's Tree

Also known as Nebuchadnezzar's Dream Tree · Nebuchadnezzar's Tree Dream · The Great Tree · The Immense Tree · The Heaven-High Tree · The Tree of Daniel 4 · The Banded Tree Stump · The Rootstock of the Great Tree · The Symbolic Tree · The Tree of World Sovereignty

The interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's great tree underwent two major changes. In 1877, Nebuchadnezzar was presented as a type of Adam and the fallen human race, while the tree and its surviving root illustrated humanity's lost dominion and the promise of restitution. In 1880, the seven times of Nebuchadnezzar were also applied to the 2,520 years of Gentile domination, and the Adamic interpretation of the tree was restated in 1888. In 1934, the tree was reinterpreted as the original organization of creation under Lucifer's invisible overlordship, later described as Satan's organization, while the preserved stump represented mankind and the new tree represented Jehovah's righteous organization under Christ. This understanding of the tree as Lucifer's original heavenly office continued through 1952. By 1958, a different interpretation had emerged: the tree represented world sovereignty belonging by right to God, particularly its expression through the Davidic kingdom in Jerusalem. This explanation was reinforced in 1963, 1964, 1967, and 1971. From 1977 onward, publications increasingly described the tree as Jehovah's universal sovereignty or divine rulership, expressed through the Davidic kings, interrupted with Jerusalem's destruction in 607 B.C.E., and restored through Jesus Christ's heavenly kingship in 1914 after seven symbolic times or 2,520 years. Later publications, including those of 1999, 2005, 2006, 2014, 2015, 2021, and 2026, maintained the distinction between the initial fulfillment on Nebuchadnezzar and the larger application to God's Kingdom.

Nebuchadnezzar was a type of the natural man, the first Adam and his race.
The Three Worlds, and the Harvest of This World, 1877
The long period of 2520 years and their bitter experience under the dominion of the beasts, (human governments, `Dan. 7`) is clearly represented in `Dan. 4`, by the "seven times" of Nebuchadnezzar and his bitter experience among the beasts.
    Zion's Watch Tower, June 1880
This remarkable tree, in its glory and beauty, represented the first dominion of earth given to the human race in its representative and head, Adam, to whom God said, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth."

The tree continued to symbolize the righteous heavenly overlordship originally entrusted to Lucifer in Eden. Its cutting down represented the removal or suspension of that office after his rebellion. The surviving stump guaranteed that rightful divine rulership would eventually be exercised again, through the establishment of God's theocratic government under Christ.

    3 quotes
Therefore the great tree reaching unto heaven that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon saw pictured Lucifer’s heavenly office, namely, the invisible overlordship over Adam and Eve and the lower animal creatures.
The Truth Shall Make You Free, 1943
In this Jehovah used the king of Babylon to picture a yet greater fulfillment of the prophecy, namely, the cutting down of Satan as righteous overlord of the earth and the restoration of Theocratic rule.—See Chapter 18 of “The Truth Shall Make You Free”.
    Let God Be True, 1946
God’s sovereignty in fact operating through this anointed cherub was fittingly described by the lofty tree in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream.

  2. 1958–1974 Reversal

The principal identification changed from Lucifer's original heavenly office to world sovereignty or domination belonging by right to Jehovah God. The tree's initial application was to Nebuchadnezzar's kingship, but its greater application concerned the interruption of God's representative rulership through the Davidic monarchy. The tree represented Jehovah's universal sovereignty, specifically its earthly expression through the kings of David's line. Its cutting down corresponded to the removal of the Davidic king in Jerusalem in 607 B.C.E. The bands around the stump represented the temporary restraint of God's representative rulership during 2,520 years of Gentile domination. Its renewed growth represented the beginning of Christ's heavenly kingship in 1914. The tree was also described as representing world domination in an abstract sense, with an initial application to Nebuchadnezzar.

The tree's twofold interpretation continued. In the initial fulfillment it represented Nebuchadnezzar's kingship, which was interrupted during his seven times of madness. In the greater fulfillment it represented Jehovah's sovereignty, especially as expressed toward the earth through the Davidic monarchy. The cutting down symbolized the interruption of that representative rulership in 607 B.C.E., and the seven symbolic times were understood to end when Jesus began ruling in heaven in 1914. Publications through 2026 continued to connect Daniel chapter 4 with the commencement of Messianic kingship.
