Mount Sinai

Also in Русский · Українська

Also known as Sinai · Mt. Sinai · Mount Horeb · Horeb · Mount Sinai in Arabia · Mount of God · The Mountain of God

In 1877–1880 Mount Sinai was associated with Hagar, the Mosaic Law arrangement, and earthly Jerusalem in bondage. In 1885–1913 the Law covenant and the events at Sinai were explained as types of the New Covenant and its inauguration at antitypical Mount Zion. In 1907 Sinai itself was explicitly identified as a type of God's Kingdom, an identification repeated in 1924–1925. In 1918 the Sinai covenant ceremony was connected with the anticipated inauguration of the Messianic Kingdom. In 1928 Horeb represented heaven in a particular covenant scene, while the 1928–1929 Sinai–Zion comparison distinguished the beginning of Israel's journey from the place of settled government. In 1929–1930 Horeb was identified with God's organization. In 1932–1933 Sinai's terrifying manifestations prefigured greater events connected with the New Covenant. In 1934–1935 its shaking was interpreted more specifically as a judgment and refining process among consecrated people, said to have begun about 1918; in 1936 the New Covenant application was directed toward the anointed remnant. In 1942 the shaking was applied more broadly to Satan's world, with its modern commencement assigned to 1914. In 1944 Sinai was identified with the Hagar organization, the natural nation of Israel under the Law covenant. Explanations in 1955–1966 continued to associate Hagar, Sinai, the covenant arrangement, and earthly Jerusalem. The blood used at Sinai was also interpreted in 1956–1957 as picturing Jesus' sacrificial blood. In 1972 the comparison between Sinai's shaking and the removal of the present system was repeated. In 1985 a significant clarification explicitly denied that either Hagar or Mount Sinai represented the Mosaic Law covenant itself, identifying Sinai instead with earthly Jerusalem and the nation associated with that covenant. This distinction was retained in 1988, while explanations in 1992 and 2000 continued to connect Hagar and Sinai with earthly Jerusalem and bondage under the Law.

Key moments

  1. 1877–1880 Introduced Mount Sinai, identified with Hagar in Paul's allegory, represents the arrangement associated with the Mosaic Law and earthly Jerusalem in bondage. It contrasts with the free heavenly Jerusalem and the spiritual inheritance promised through Christ.
  2. 1907 Refined Mount Sinai itself is explicitly identified as a type of the Kingdom of God. The Law given from the mountain represents the divine law that would be proclaimed under the New Covenant through the glorified Christ.
  3. 1934–1935 Narrowed The shaking at Sinai is interpreted specifically as a searching judgment, sifting, and refining of people consecrated to God. This process is said to have begun about 1918, when Christ came to the temple for judgment. The interpretation narrows the shaking to those associated with the covenant rather than a general worldwide upheaval.
  4. 1936 Refined The inauguration of the Law covenant at Sinai is applied to the inauguration of the New Covenant toward the anointed remnant following Christ's coming to the temple. The explanation locates the antitypical application in the contemporary period rather than exclusively in the future Millennium.
  5. 1942 Broadened The shaking of Mount Sinai is interpreted as a prophetic picture of a larger shaking of Satan's entire world organization, including its symbolic heavens and earth. The shaking is said to have begun after the establishment of God's Kingdom in 1914 and to culminate at Armageddon, broadening the application beyond the judgment of consecrated people.
  6. 1944–1966 Refined Mount Sinai is associated with the antitypical Hagar organization, namely natural Israel as a national organization under the Mosaic Law covenant. Later explanations associate Hagar with the Law covenant arrangement and earthly Jerusalem in bondage, contrasting this with God's free heavenly organization. The interpretation focuses on the covenant-bound nation and its religious condition.
  7. 1985–1988 Refined The Hagar and Sinai symbolism is explicitly clarified. Neither Hagar nor Mount Sinai is identified with the Mosaic Law covenant as an impersonal agreement. Instead, Sinai corresponds to earthly Jerusalem, representing the organized Jewish nation under that covenant. The parallel free woman is God's heavenly organization, the Jerusalem above. The 1988 reference work retains this organizational explanation.
  8. 2026 Refined The discussion again linked Hagar and Mount Sinai with the Law covenant and slavery. Its explicit correction concerned the contrasting covenant: Sarah was associated with the Abrahamic covenant rather than the new covenant, correcting the 2006 explanation. No new standalone prophetic antitype of Sinai was announced.

  1. 1877–1880 Introduced

Mount Sinai, identified with Hagar in Paul's allegory, represents the arrangement associated with the Mosaic Law and earthly Jerusalem in bondage. It contrasts with the free heavenly Jerusalem and the spiritual inheritance promised through Christ.

    2 quotes
The earthly Jerusalem with her children, including the fleshy kingdom of David with all that pertained to that dispensation, "stands for Agar, which is Mount Sinai in Arabia."
    The Three Worlds, 1877
Which things are an allegory; for these are the two covenants; the one from Mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
    The Watchtower, April 1, 1880
  2. 1885–1913 Depends on context

The Law covenant instituted at Sinai and the dramatic circumstances surrounding its inauguration prefigure the New Covenant and its establishment through Christ at antitypical Mount Zion, the Messianic Kingdom. The associated shaking represents the trouble and upheaval accompanying the transition to the Kingdom.

    4 quotes
The Law Covenant was given to teach this lesson, and to typify and illustrate the operations of the New Covenant coming after it, as well as to fill up the time intervening before the right time of the introduction of the New Covenant which it typified.
    The Watchtower, October 1, 1885
These solemn ceremonies prefigured the still more impressive circumstances which accompany the establishment of the "new covenant" in the hands of the mediator greater than Moses--our Lord Jesus Christ.
    The Watchtower, January 1, 1896
The antitype of what occurred at Mt. Sinai will take place at Mt. Zion (the Millennial Kingdom of Christ) as soon as the "election" closes and the new age opens.
    The Watchtower, April 1, 1909
As the journey to the Promised Land brought the Israelites to Mt. Sinai and the Law Covenant, so the journey of God's people will ultimately bring all the willing, obedient and faithful to the antitype of Mt. Sinai; namely, Mt. Zion, God's Kingdom, for which Jesus taught us to pray, "Thy Kingdom Come; Thy will be done on earth, as it is done in Heaven."
    The Watchtower, August 1, 1913
  3. 1907 Refined

Mount Sinai itself is explicitly identified as a type of the Kingdom of God. The Law given from the mountain represents the divine law that would be proclaimed under the New Covenant through the glorified Christ.

    1 quote
The perishing of some for despising Moses' Law was intended to be a type or picture of the everlasting destruction of those who would despise the antitypical Moses and the redemptive work accomplished through him, and who consequently shall be destroyed in the Second Death. Their Mount Sinai represented as a type the Kingdom of God. The giving of the Law therefrom represented the promulgation of the divine Law at the institution of the New Covenant at the hands of the antitypical Mediator, the Christ of glory, in the end of this age.
    The Watchtower, August 1, 1907

  1. 1918 Unchanged

The events surrounding the inauguration of the Law covenant at Sinai are applied to the anticipated inauguration of the Messianic Kingdom. Particular significance is attached to the third day and the accompanying shaking and testing.

    1 quote
God directed the children of Israel through Moses, to purify themselves three days, saying that on the morning of the third day he would make a covenant with them through Moses as their mediator. On the third day, amidst a great convulsion of the elements, the covenant was made. This circumstance foretold that Messiah's kingdom would be inaugurated in the morning of the third thousand-year day.
    The Watchtower, March 15, 1918
  2. 1924–1925 Unchanged

Mount Sinai is again identified as a symbol of God's Millennial Kingdom, repeating the explicit 1907 identification. The 1924 explanation also assigns symbolic roles to Moses, Joshua, the seventy elders, and the Israelites, representing the Kingdom administration and humanity receiving its blessings.

    2 quotes
Sinai is thus seen as very closely related to the establishment of the kingdom of heaven, when the righteous requirements of God will be made known to all men. And Sinai does in a very special way represent the kingdom.
    The Watchtower, January 1, 1924
Mount Sinai is a symbol of the kingdom. The outcome of that covenant held the Israelites in bondage to sin and death. 33 The blood as a basis for the New Covenant was shed on earth, or in the world, which was pictured by Egypt, at the time that Jesus died upon the cross. There the antitypical Lamb was slain.
    The Watchtower, March 15, 1925
  3. 1928 Depends on context

In the prophetic interpretation of the ratification of the Law covenant, Horeb, another designation for Sinai, represents heaven itself. This identification concerns a particular covenant scene rather than an explicit rejection of the Kingdom symbolism.

    1 quote
Egypt represented the world wherein the Israelites were. Horeb is the mount of God and represents heaven itself. In making the picture here it was only appropriate that the book of the law should be sprinkled with the blood at Horeb and not in Egypt. The evidence therefore shows that the covenant was made in Egypt and confirmed or ratified at Mount Sinai.
    The Watchtower, April 1, 1928
  4. 1928–1929 Depends on context

In a comparison of Sinai and Zion, Sinai represents the beginning of Israel's wilderness journey and its meeting with God, whereas Zion represents the destination and settled governmental arrangement. The contrast distinguishes Sinai from Zion as different stages in the divine arrangement.

    2 quotes
Sinai may be said to represent the beginning of Israel’s wandering, and Zion their place of rest, or settled government.
    The Watchtower, July 15, 1928
There he spoke to them his law. The performance of the covenant really began at Mount Sinai. From there they journeyed on, and in due time entered the land of Palestine. Later the typical kingdom was established under David and Solomon. It may be properly said that Sinai began the wanderings of the Israelites and Zion marked the end thereof.
    The Watchtower, April 1, 1929
  5. 1929–1930 Depends on context

Mount Horeb represents God's organization in contrast with Egypt, which represents the Devil's organization. Israel's deliverance from Egypt and arrival at Horeb illustrates movement from Satan's oppressive organization to God's arrangement and government.

    2 quotes
Egypt symbolized the Devil’s organization, while Mount Horeb pictured God’s organization. The Lord God miraculously delivered the Israelites from Egypt and brought them to Horeb, and there gave them his law or rule of action by which they would be governed and which points to the way of life. The great issue then was, Who is God? Whom shall we serve?
    The Watchtower, August 1, 1929

  6. 1932–1933 Depends on context

The fear-inspiring manifestations at Sinai foreshadow more terrible manifestations accompanying or immediately preceding the inauguration of the New Covenant. These future events are connected with the demonstration of Jehovah's power to the nations.

    2 quotes
At or immediately preceding the inauguration of the new covenant that which the people will behold will be equally terrible as or even more so than that at Mount Sinai.
    The Watchtower, May 15, 1932
At or immediately preceding the inauguration of the new covenant that which the people will behold will be equally terrible as or even more so than that at Mount Sinai.
    1933 Yearbook of Jehovah's Witnesses
  7. 1934–1935 Narrowed

The shaking at Sinai is interpreted specifically as a searching judgment, sifting, and refining of people consecrated to God. This process is said to have begun about 1918, when Christ came to the temple for judgment. The interpretation narrows the shaking to those associated with the covenant rather than a general worldwide upheaval.

    2 quotes
What came to pass at Mount Sinai was typical, and foreshadowed a shaking which is a searching judgment process upon those who have covenanted to do God's will and which takes place at the time Christ Jesus sits in judgment as a refiner, and at which time there is a great shakeup amongst the creatures who have made a consecration to do God's will.
    The Watchtower, May 15, 1934

  8. 1936 Refined

The inauguration of the Law covenant at Sinai is applied to the inauguration of the New Covenant toward the anointed remnant following Christ's coming to the temple. The explanation locates the antitypical application in the contemporary period rather than exclusively in the future Millennium.

    1 quote
The fact that the prophecy refers to the inauguration of the law covenant at Sinai, or Horeb, shows that it now applies to the inauguration of the new covenant toward his remnant people on the earth since the coming of Christ Jesus to the temple.

The shaking of Mount Sinai is interpreted as a prophetic picture of a larger shaking of Satan's entire world organization, including its symbolic heavens and earth. The shaking is said to have begun after the establishment of God's Kingdom in 1914 and to culminate at Armageddon, broadening the application beyond the judgment of consecrated people.

    1 quote
The fearful shaking at Mount Sinai was actual, but was also prophetic of a larger shaking, the shaking of Satan’s world with its “heavens and the earth, which are now.”—2 Pet. 3: 7.
    The Watchtower, September 15, 1942
  2. 1944–1966 Refined

Mount Sinai is associated with the antitypical Hagar organization, namely natural Israel as a national organization under the Mosaic Law covenant. Later explanations associate Hagar with the Law covenant arrangement and earthly Jerusalem in bondage, contrasting this with God's free heavenly organization. The interpretation focuses on the covenant-bound nation and its religious condition.

    4 quotes
Mount Sinai having become associated with the Hagar organization, the mountain became a symbol of the same organization as Hagar symbolized.
    The Watchtower, January 15, 1944
Hagar represented the law covenant arrangement that was instituted at Mount Sinai and that brought forth natural Israel as a nation of people for Jehovah’s name and that resulted in Jerusalem with its temple for the offering of sacrifices according to the terms of the covenant.
    The Watchtower, April 1, 1955
Hagar and Sarah were more than historical figures; they were prophetic of two organizations that are distinguished by two covenants: “These things stand as a symbolic drama; for these women mean two covenants, the one from mount Sinai, which brings forth children for slavery, and which is Hagar.
    The Watchtower, September 15, 1958
In view of the above the apostle Paul compares the nation of Israel to the Egyptian woman, Hagar, the slave girl of Sarah, the free wife of the patriarch Abraham.

  3. 1956–1957 Depends on context

In the covenant inauguration scene at Mount Sinai, the blood of the sacrificial animals pictures Jesus Christ's sacrificial blood, which provides the basis for the New Covenant. This interpretation concerns a particular element of the Sinai event rather than a new identification of the mountain itself.

    2 quotes
The blood of all those bulls and goats slaughtered there at Mount Sinai pictured the blood of Jesus Christ, the mediator of Jehovah’s new covenant, for the blood of those animals was mixed together in bowls and was then sprinkled upon the law book and people.
    The Watchtower, January 15, 1956

    1957 Yearbook of Jehovah's Witnesses
  4. 1972 Unchanged

The Sinai-shaking comparison is repeated in connection with the future removal of the present world system. The modern worldwide shaking described in Hebrews 12 and Haggai 2 is contrasted with the literal shaking of Sinai, and God's Kingdom is identified as the unshakable arrangement that remains.

    1 quote
At that time his voice shook the earth [but did not shake Mount Sinai to pieces], but now he has promised, saying: 'Yet once more I will set in commotion not only the earth but also the heaven.'

  1. 1985–1988 Refined

The Hagar and Sinai symbolism is explicitly clarified.

    4 quotes
Hagar does not typify, or represent, the Mosaic Law covenant. Nor is that covenant with its Ten Commandments pictured by Mount Sinai, with which Hagar corresponds. Of course, God did not make any covenant with Mount Sinai. But it was there that he brought the Israelites, whom he had freed from Egyptian bondage, into a covenant relationship with himself, and he dealt with them as a free nation.
    The Watchtower, March 15, 1985
But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother."—Galatians 4: 25, 26. 10 Hagar does not typify, or represent, the Mosaic Law covenant. Nor is that covenant with its Ten Commandments pictured by Mount Sinai, with which Hagar corresponds. Of course, God did not make any covenant with Mount Sinai. The Watchtower, March 15, 1985
In that way the nation of Israel became subject to the Law covenant. Centuries later, however, that covenant was removed, being nailed to Jesus' torture stake in 33 C.E.—Colossians 2:13, 14. 12 Paul wrote that Mount Sinai corresponded with the Jerusalem below of his day. Of course, Jerusalem was not a covenant; it was a prized city occupied by Jewish residents.
    The Watchtower, March 15, 1985
In this passage the apostle speaks of Abraham's free wife and of his concubine Hagar and says that Hagar corresponds to the literal city of Jerusalem under the law covenant, her "children" being the citizens of the Jewish nation.

  1. 1992–2000 Unchanged

The Galatians 4 symbolic drama continues to associate Mount Sinai with Hagar, the Law covenant, and the enslaved earthly Jerusalem. The 2000 explanation explicitly identifies Hagar with earthly Jerusalem, retaining the distinction between the people represented and the Law covenant under which they lived.

    2 quotes
These things stand as a symbolic drama; for these women mean two covenants, the one [the Law covenant] from Mount Sinai [where God inaugurated that covenant with the Israelites], which brings forth children for slavery, and which is Hagar.
    The Watchtower, March 15, 1992
Is there some inconsistency here? Not at all. The apostle Paul shows that the answer lies in the prophetic picture provided by Abraham's family. (Galatians 4:22-31; see "The Family of Abraham—A Prophetic Picture," on page 218.) Sarah, "the free woman" and Abraham's wife, pictures Jehovah's wifelike organization of spirit creatures. Hagar, a slave girl and Abraham's secondary wife, or concubine, pictures earthly Jerusalem.
    Isaiah's Prophecy—Light for All Mankind, Volume 2, 2000
  2. 2006 Depends on context

The symbolic drama linked Hagar’s Israel to the Law covenant at Sinai and Sarah to God’s heavenly wife, whose spirit-born children entered a new-covenant relationship. This documents the earlier explanation referenced by the already recorded 2026 correction.

    2 quotes
The Jewish nation was bound to Jehovah by the Law covenant inaugurated at Mount Sinai.
The Watchtower, March 15, 2006, pp. 10–12, “A Symbolic Drama” of Value to Us
Paul indicated that Sarah, the “barren woman,” symbolized God’s wife, the heavenly part of his organization.
The Watchtower, March 15, 2006, pp. 10–12, “A Symbolic Drama” of Value to Us
  3. 2026 Refined

The discussion again linked Hagar and Mount Sinai with the Law covenant and slavery. Its explicit correction concerned the contrasting covenant: Sarah was associated with the Abrahamic covenant rather than the new covenant, correcting the 2006 explanation. No new standalone prophetic antitype of Sinai was announced.

    1 quote
