Also known as Melchisedec · Melchizedek king of Salem · King of Salem · King of righteousness · King of peace · Priest of the Most High God · King-Priest Melchizedek · The royal priest Melchizedek · The Greater Melchizedek · The antitypical Melchizedek · Priest after the order of Melchizedek

The earliest identified explanation, in 1877, associated Melchizedek's royal priesthood with the Gospel Church. From 1880 through 1915, Russell-era publications explained the antitype more fully as the glorified Christ, Head and Body, contrasting the sacrificing Aaronic priesthood with the future royal priesthood represented by Melchizedek. Rutherford-era publications initially preserved this understanding. From 1925, particular emphasis was placed on Jesus Christ personally as Jehovah's Chief Executive Officer, King, Priest, and Executor of the divine plan. Nevertheless, the collective application to Christ and his associated royal priesthood continued in 1927, 1936, and 1938, showing that the interpretations coexisted. During the Knorr presidency, beginning with publications in 1942 and 1943, Melchizedek continued to prefigure Jesus as the greater King-Priest, while a 1954 publication explicitly described the everlasting royal priesthood after Melchizedek's likeness as consisting of Christ Jesus and 144,000 underpriests. In 1959 the government of Melchizedek was also explained as a prophetic type of God's perfect government over mankind. In 1973 the permanence of Christ's priesthood was clarified: his mediatorial services toward perfected humanity would end, although their benefits would remain forever. Franz-era publications retained the identification with Jesus. In 1988, Insight on the Scriptures explicitly distinguished Jesus as the only priest according to the manner of Melchizedek from his associated Christian underpriests, making the direct application of that priestly designation more specific than the earlier collective language. The same publication explained Melchizedek's unrecorded genealogy and lack of successors and described the proposed identification with Shem as unconfirmed. In 1990 the prophetic warrior aspect of the greater Melchizedek received special attention. Governing Body-era publications from 1995 through 2000 continued to identify Jesus as the prophetic antitype, emphasizing his permanent kingship, superior priesthood, and appointment by Jehovah's oath. No complete abandonment of the identification with Jesus Christ was established.

  1. 1877 Introduced

Melchizedek's royal priesthood is associated with the Gospel Church, understood as the future royal priesthood.

    1 quote
With verse 10, and onward, the prophecy has reached the gospel church; "the royal priesthood" after the order of Melchizedek.
    The Three Worlds, 1877
  2. 1880–1915 Refined

Melchizedek represents the glorified royal priesthood of Christ and his Church, distinguished from the Aaronic priesthood of earthly suffering and sacrifice. Jesus is the Head and the faithful Church is his Body. Together they will reign, judge, and bless mankind. The Melchizedek type particularly illustrates the future royal office rather than the present work of sacrifice.

    11 quotes
Here it is that the Aaronic priesthood ends and the Melchizedek priesthood begins, the one typical of our career of suffering and death, the other represents our exalted condition as, with Jesus, "a King upon His throne," blessing all people.
    The Watchtower, May 1, 1880
The golden crown proclaims his royalty: He is to be "a priest upon his throne"-a priest forever (for the age) after the order of Melchizedek.
    The Watchtower, January 14, 1882
The golden crown proclaims his royalty: He is to be "a priest upon his throne"--"a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek."
    The Watchtower, August 1, 1890
Melchizedek was not a priest who offered sacrifices in a linen robe; he was a priest who was at the same time a king—"A priest upon his throne."
    The New Creation, 1904
This is the great Prophet, the great Priest, the great King, typified by Moses and Melchizedek and the kings of the line of David.
    The Watchtower, July 15, 1905
He gives the intimation that while Jesus and his Church in the flesh in their sacrificing work were typified by Aaron and his sons, nevertheless the real work of this higher priesthood is a future one of glory, when Jesus, the great Priest, and the Church, his Body, an under priesthood, associated with him, will be installed in a kingly, as well as a priestly office, and in ruling, as well as teaching authority.
    The Watchtower, November 15, 1909
During the New Dispensation that glorious Priest, Head and Members, will bless and uplift, rule and judge, the world of mankind, with a view to recovering as many as possible, as many as will obey him, from the ruin of sin and death.
    Bible Students Monthly, 1911
The Psalmist proceeds to compare this unity of the brethren, the Church, with the precious ointment poured upon the head of the king and of the high priest on their induction into office. The significance of the illustration evidently is that the anointing oil typified the Holy Spirit, and that as it ran down the high priest's beard, and even to the skirts of his garment, it anointed the entire body of the priest. That priest typifies Melchizedek, the Royal Priest--Jesus the Head, and the Church His Body.
    The Watchtower, May 1, 1913
This higher Order of Priests was typified by Melchizedek, the king-priest.--`Hebrews 6:20`. […] Jesus is this great antitypical Royal, or Kingly, Priest, and His Church is the Body of this antitypical Melchizedek. Before the new Order can reign as kings, and before they can serve as Priests, they must go through a certain process. The members of this Body of Christ must be first generated.
    The Watchtower, May 15, 1914
The Scriptures give us a type of this united office in the person of Melchizedek, of whom it is written that he was king of Salem and priest of the Most High God.
    The Watchtower, October 1, 1914
The great antitypical Priest was to be not only a sacrificing, but also a reigning Priest. He was to have a great work beyond the time of sacrificing. He was the antitype of Aaron, but His Priesthood was of an Order entirely different--much superior every way. This great Priest, when enthroned in glory, was designed to be after the Order of Melchizedek.

  1. 1917 Unchanged

The inherited Russell-era explanation distinguishes Melchizedek's blessing and ruling priesthood from Aaron's sacrificing priesthood. Christ's future royal-priestly work is described as blessing rather than offering further sacrifices.

    1 quote
He was not a sacrificing priest, but a blessing priest, empowered by his kingly office to give his priestly blessing.
    Pastor Russell's Sermons, 1917
  2. 1925–1926 Depends on context

In the interpretation of Psalm 110, Melchizedek is particularly identified with Jesus Christ personally as the Logos, Redeemer, Prophet, Priest, King, and great Executor of the divine plan. Jesus is Jehovah's active representative exercising divinely granted royal authority. His followers participate in the divine arrangement under his leadership.

    5 quotes
Therefore Melchizedek is a type of the Logos, of Jesus, of Christ Jesus, of the Redeemer, of the Prophet, of the Priest and of the King.
    The Watchtower, September 15, 1925
Melchizedek was a type of God’s executive officer, hence he typified the Logos, Jesus, Christ Jesus, and the great Deliverer.
    The Watchtower, November 1, 1925
We may be sure that his' plan will be carried forward in his own good way. It is written concerning Jesus Christ, “Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.” (Psalm 110:4) The Scriptures speak of Melchizedek as being a priest of the most high God. He was further a type of him who is the executive officer of the divine plan.
    The Watchtower, December 1, 1925
By this is meant that he rules as king and as priest of the Most High God, of which Melchizedek was a type: he is the active officer of the divine plan.
    The Watchtower, February 15, 1926
This work he did as the great Priest of the Most High God, typified by Melchizedek. Then began the fulfilment of the prophecy, as stated: “The Lord shall send the rod [authority to act] of thy strength out of Zion [saying], Rule thou in the midst [presence] of thine enemies. . . . Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
    The Watchtower, October 15, 1926
  3. 1927 Unchanged

The collective application of Melchizedek's royal priesthood to the completed new creation, Christ and his body members, continues to appear alongside the emphasis on Jesus personally.

    1 quote
45 Briefly summing up, we see that everyone who is in Christ Jesus is a new creature; that to Christ, Head and body, has been committed the ministration of reconciliation; that it is God who offers this commission or grants this authority; that he selects the members of the body from amongst sinful men; that these, when justified, begotten and anointed in Christ, are caused to sit with him in a heavenly condition, performing the duties of ministers of the new creation while on earth; and that when their work is done here it shall continue in the Millennial Age; and that when it is done there it will not even stop then; the new creation will be for ever of the royal priesthood, pictured by Melchizedek, and will be the active agent of Jehovah in carrying out his purposes in the ages to come.
    The Watchtower, May 1, 1927
  4. 1927–1933 Depends on context

The personal identification with Christ as Jehovah's High Priest, King, Ruler, and Executive Officer continues. Melchizedek also illustrates the divinely appointed ruler who will govern and bless the world through God's authority.

    5 quotes
ANSWER: When our Lord was the Logos and before he came to earth, he was Priest of the Most High God. When he was anointed of the spirit of Jehovah at the Jordan he was from that time forward Priest of the Most High God. This Priest had been pictured and foreshadowed by Melchizedek. As Priest of the Most High God he was performing the duties of that office in harmony with Jehovah's will.
    The Watchtower, November 15, 1927
In what capacity did Christ Jesus go forth to do this work? In the capacity of the great Priest or Executive Officer of Jehovah God, which Priest was foreshadowed by Melchizedek. It was God doing the ousting, exercising his power against Satan by and through his beloved One, his great Priest. Since all things are from Jehovah and by the Lord Jesus Christ, his Executive Officer, it is proper to say that it was God's fight against the Devil, by and through Christ Jesus.
    The Watchtower, May 15, 1927
Christ is a Priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. (Psalm 110: 4) Priest, as here used, means God's Executive Officer who shall for ever carry out God's purposes. But Christ, the "anointed" of God, more particularly refers to him as King or Ruler of the world. To anoint means to clothe with authority. (Isaiah 61: 1, 2) David was anointed to be king over Israel.
    The Watchtower, August 15, 1928
Let the fact be kept in mind that Melchizedek was a priest upon his throne. As a priest he was a servant of the Most High, and therefore the Most High’s special officer; and as a prince he was a ruler or king acting by authority from the Most High. Melchizedek was a type of the great Ruler who shall rule the world by divine right and authority.
    The Watchtower, May 15, 1932
Melchizedek there pictured the great executive officer of Jehovah God appointed to carry out God’s purposes, including the blessings that God had promised to bestow upon mankind through the seed of Abraham.
    The Watchtower, July 15, 1933
  5. 1936–1938 Unchanged

The collective royal-priesthood interpretation remains in use. God's completed new creation, consisting of Jesus as Head and his body members, constitutes the royal priesthood foreshadowed by Melchizedek. Jesus personally is recognized as the great royal Priest and Head of that priesthood.

    3 quotes
God’s new creation complete will constitute the great royal priesthood of God, which priesthood was foreshadowed long ago by Melchizedek, who was both the king of ancient Salem and also “priest of the Most High God”, and who also blessed the patriarch Abraham after God had given him the victory over the enemies.
    The Watchtower, June 15, 1936
He is the royal priest, and in this office he was foreshadowed by the ancient king of Salem, Melchizedek, “a priest upon his throne.”
    The Watchtower, April 1, 1938
Only those who respond to God’s invitation to the kingdom are ever in line for the kingdom. At Ezekiel 44: 10 it is written: “And the Levites that are gone away far from me, when Israel went astray, which went astray away from me after their idols; they shall even bear their iniquity.” Many such were recovered. Jehovah declared his purpose to have a royal priesthood after the order of Melchizedek. Christ Jesus is Head thereof.
    The Watchtower, November 1, 1938
  6. 1940–1941 Unchanged

Melchizedek continues to picture Christ Jesus as Jehovah's divinely appointed High Priest and Chief Executive Officer, particularly in connection with the execution of divine judgment and the heavenly warfare against Satan.

    2 quotes
The early prototype of this true priest was a king named Melchizedek, being at one and the same time high priest of the Most High God and also king of the ancient city of Salem.
    The Watchtower, June 15, 1940
In the capacity of the great Priest or Executive Officer of Jehovah God, which Priest was foreshadowed by King Melchizedek, “priest of the Most High God.”

Melchizedek foreshadows Jesus Christ as Jehovah's greater King-Priest, High Priest, and Chief Executive Officer. Jesus' priesthood is superior to the Levitical arrangement and rests on God's appointment rather than human genealogy. The associated royal priesthood is explicitly said to consist of Christ Jesus and 144,000 underpriests. Melchizedek's ancient government also serves as a prophetic picture of the perfect government of God's Kingdom.

    15 quotes
Jehovah’s “high priest after the order of Melchizedek” has come to reign, and not for any representing of his sin-offering.
    The Watchtower, September 1, 1942
Christ Jesus fulfills completely this part of the prophecy and is God’s High Priest and Chief Executive Officer for ever, and he gave that which will bring and sustain life.
    The Watchtower, May 15, 1943
In Psalm 110, quoted above, David prophesied about this, saying: “Jehovah hath sworn, and will not repent: thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.” (Ps. 110:4, Am. Stan. Ver.) Jehovah’s oath is beyond withdrawal. By it Christ Jesus was made High Priest after the rank of the ancient priest-king Melchizedek. Jesus by his own human sacrifice on earth offered the one and only sacrifice that could count for man and that proved Jesus to be a true high priest.
    The Watchtower, September 1, 1947
Paul in writing to the Hebrews is very explicit that Christ as the high priest of God, ordained to offer greater sacrifices than those offered by the Aaronic priesthood, was pictured by Melchizedek.
    The Watchtower, September 15, 1950
Hence he was used in prophetic history to foreshadow the righteous King of the new world, Jehovah’s Son Jesus Christ.
    The Watchtower, 1950
MELCHIZEDEK was a royal priest, and the royal priesthood was made like him. The apostle Paul teaches: “Christ did not glorify himself by becoming a high priest, but was glorified by him who spoke with reference to him: ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father.’ Just as he says also in another place: ‘You are a priest forever after the likeness of Melchizedek.’ . . . he has been specifically called by God a high priest after the likeness of Melchizedek.” (Heb. 5:5, 6, 10, NW)
    The Watchtower, April 1, 1954
It is the establishment and functioning of this royal priesthood that give the hope to people of all nations that Jehovah is their God and that there is hope of reconciliation with him. The royal priesthood is made up of Christ Jesus, the great High Priest, and underpriests numbering 144,000. It is to be an everlasting priesthood “after the likeness of Melchizedek.”
    The Watchtower, April 1, 1954
In accord with his sworn oath Jehovah raised him up as a royal priest like Melchizedek but having the divine nature.
    The Watchtower, 1955
But this government of the priest-king Melchizedek is used in the Bible prophecy as a prophetic type or prefigurement of the perfect government that God will establish over all mankind in the hands of a perfect ruler, like Melchizedek.—Ps. 110:1-4; Heb. 5:10; 6:20; 7:1-17, 28.
    The Watchtower, April 15, 1959
The high priest of that new priesthood according to the manner of Melchizedek, rather than Aaron, is Christ Jesus, and as such he has underpriests on earth.—Heb. 7:11, 12.
    The Watchtower, March 1, 1963
So, too, Jesus' being God's High Priest does not result from any human connections; it is not because of his genealogy.
    The Watchtower, August 1, 1964
He presented him as the resurrected Jesus, whom God had exalted to his own right hand and made to be the King-Priest foreshadowed by the ancient Melchizedek king of Salem and priest of the Most High God.
    The Watchtower, November 1, 1966
He held Melchizedek forth as the model of the coming High Priest of God who will really do something for the people, something of eternal value.
    The Watchtower, April 15, 1968
This last one of course means that (4) Jesus also qualified to be a "king," like Melchizedek. To these we can add that (5) Jesus is appointed "mediator of a new covenant," and also (6) enjoys supreme exaltation to the "right hand of the throne of God." Lastly, (7) he was made head "as a Son over" God's house of sons.
    The Watchtower, September 15, 1970
The royal priestly turban is placed upon his head as a "high priest according to the manner of Melchizedek forever."
Paradise Restored to Mankind—By Theocracy!, 1972
  2. 1973 Refined

The permanence of Jesus' Melchizedek-like priesthood is clarified. His mediatorial services toward mankind end when humanity reaches perfection, but the effects of his royal-priestly ministry and his own life continue forever.

    1 quote
Cessation of his office as a mediating High Priest toward mankind does not end his life. The good effects of his service as King and High Priest over mankind will remain forever with mankind, and mankind will forever be indebted to him for having served as King and High Priest in their behalf. To all eternity they will bow the knee at the name of Jesus and confess that he is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus remains the greater Melchizedek, serving as heavenly King and High Priest through divine appointment rather than Levitical descent. His position is superior to Aaron's priesthood and remains effective for mankind.

    5 quotes
From the Christian Greek Scriptures we learn that Jesus Christ is the Mediator of the new covenant, that he is the king-priest according to the manner of Melchizedek and that his perfect human body constitutes the divinely acceptable atoning sacrifice.
    The Watchtower, June 1, 1977
This one became the antitype of the high priest Aaron and has also become a priest upon his heavenly throne, like Melchizedek.
    The Watchtower, December 1, 1979
So, down to our own day, the glorified Jesus Christ remains a royal High Priest, higher than the chief priests of ancient Israel with their material symbol of dedication.
    The Watchtower, February 15, 1982
The context shows that Paul originally had much to say to the Hebrew Christians concerning the "high priest according to the manner of Melchizedek," Jesus Christ.
    The Watchtower, 1985
The words of Psalm 110:4 apply to Jesus: "Jehovah has sworn (and he will feel no regret): 'You are a priest to time indefinite according to the manner of Melchizedek!'"—Hebrews 7:20, 21.
Worldwide Security Under the Prince of Peace, 1986
  2. 1988 Narrowed

Jesus Christ is expressly identified as the only priest according to the manner of Melchizedek, while his Christian associates are distinguished as underpriests. This makes the direct identification with Melchizedek's particular priesthood narrower than earlier collective descriptions of the royal priesthood. Melchizedek's unrecorded ancestry and lack of successors foreshadow the unique, permanent priesthood of Jesus. The conjecture identifying Melchizedek with Shem is treated as unconfirmed.

    2 quotes
Jesus Christ is the only priest "according to the manner of Melchizedek" (Heb 7:17), but like Aaron the high priest of Israel, Jesus Christ has a body of underpriests provided for him by his Father, Jehovah.
Insight on the Scriptures, Volume 1, 1988
As Melchizedek had no recorded predecessor or successor in his priesthood, so too Christ was preceded by no high priest similar to himself, and the Bible shows that none will ever succeed him.

The identification of Jesus as the permanent High Priest according to the manner of Melchizedek is repeated, with particular attention to Jehovah's oath establishing this priesthood.

Melchizedek continues to be identified as a prophetic type of Jesus Christ, the superior and permanent High Priest and heavenly King. His priesthood derives from Jehovah's oath rather than human ancestry. Publications also repeat that the mediatorial services of Jesus toward mankind will cease when no longer needed, while the benefits of his priesthood remain forever.

    6 quotes
However, Jesus Christ presides over the entire house. Christ is a high priest after the order of Melchizedek, having a position far superior to the Aaronic priesthood. Paul also pointed out that the Israelites were unable to enter into God's rest because of a lack of faith and obedience, but Christians enter into it because of their faithfulness and obedience.—Hebrews 3:1-4:11.
    The Watchtower, May 15, 1995
They turned to a long line of high priests and associate priests, who offered sacrifices for their own sins as well as for those of the people. In time, Jesus was anointed as a priest "according to the manner of Melchizedek." After being resurrected, Jesus appeared before Jehovah to present the value of his perfect human sacrifice. —Psalm 110:1. 4.
    The Watchtower, June 1, 1995
But Jesus "has become a high priest according to the manner of Melchizedek forever." (Hebrews 6:19, 20; 7:3) So the cessation of Jesus' office as a mediating High Priest toward mankind does not end his life. The good effects of his service as King and High Priest will remain with mankind forever, and humans will be eternally indebted to him for his having served in these capacities.
    The Watchtower, November 15, 1995
This meant that God would in due course recall his Son to heavenly life, where he would serve at his Father's right hand as King and High Priest "according to the manner of Melchizedek forever."—Hebrews 6:20; Psalm 110:1, 4.
    The Watchtower, July 1, 1996
He thus made a fitting prophetic type of Jesus, whose priesthood depended, not on any imperfect human ancestry, but on something far greater—Jehovah God's own oath.
