The church being God’s organization, taken out of the world for His name’s sake, it follows that the members thereof are those who worship the Almighty God in spirit and in truth. (John 4:23) They honor God, and not man and manmade organizations. Such true worshipers cannot be faithful to God and at the same time participate in the political affairs of this wicked world. Those who worship God in spirit and in truth are wholly devoted to him in obeying his commandments. “For the worship [mistranslated religion in the Authorised Version] that is pure and holy before God the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and the widows in their affliction, and that one keep himself unspotted from the world.”—James 1: 27, Syriac Version.

But this learned clergyman has said enough, so that there is no doubt from his testimony that the ceremonies practiced by the Roman Catholic religious system originated with the deceitful demons; and that such ceremonies and practices were carried on by Pagan Rome and adopted by the Roman Catholic religious organization. Cardinal Newman attempts to picture this as the “development of Christian doctrine”, but in reality he shows it to be the death-dealing corruption of Christian doctrine. It certainly cannot be called “pure religion”, or, “religion clean and undefiled before God.”—Jas. 1: 27; Douay Version.
